Magazine Promotional Poster:
I have created a Prezi to present my deconstruction of Calvin Harris' 18 Months album promotional poster which was found in magazines.
All in all, the three media products of the artist are particularly different from each other, the music video conveys a travelling image, the digipak portrays an urban setting and the promotional poster presents a clubbing image. Perhaps the artist's objective is to appeal to a wide range of audience and with his popularity status he is attempting to make dance music a more versatile genre.
Focus Group
"I specifically like the how the artist included the hits which feature in the album as I think this is useful and effective. However, in my opinion the artist should have made more of an attempt to tie all three of his media products together so people can recognise his work."
"I think the theme of the poster suits the dance genre well, however, it would have made more sense if the poster followed the same these as the album cover."
"The poster does well to show who it is promoting but I think it should specifically mention that it's promoting an album as it looks like it could be promoting a tour."
"I like the way a large image is used of the artist as it makes it very clear who the poster is about and especially because music producers typically don't promote themselves as a branding image."
Lessons to be Learnt
- A medium close-up shot of the artist is effective at directing the audience and making them feel targeted at
- The background of the poster is out of focus to bring attention to the image of the artist and the text
- The artist’s logo and album title is displayed in the same way as the digipak
- It is effective to list the artist’s hits from the album
- An image of the album cover is useful to display for familiarity
