Filming in Low Light

Our music video involves filming shots in low-key lighting, this includes the shots on the high street and in the bedroom. This may significantly reduce the quality of the video and it is referred as noise. Noise is the term used to describe visual distortion, it looks similar to grain but can also look like splotches of discolouration in worse cases.

Noise commonly appears when shooting in low light, therefore, I have researched how to reduce this in preparation of filming. The video below made by the official DLSR Guide clearly shows how to shoot in low light:

The following key points were drawn from the video:
  1. Using a wide aperture will let in as much light as possible
  2. Better quality shots can be taken from keeping ISO around 400 and simply using lights to improve the lighting
  3. Use plenty of lights in the background of the shots to achieve a more natural night scene
  4. Consider changing location with more lighting
